Tu BiShvat Through a Feminist Lens: Nature, Renewal, and Women’s Leadership

On January 29, ahead of Tu BiShvat, participants in the PKI’s Ramat Gan women’s group gathered for a thoughtful conversation exploring the connection between the New Year of the Trees and feminism.

Led by Asya Axelrod, participants reflected on nature as a source of healing and grounding—especially in times of stress and uncertainty. Tu BiShvat, a holiday rooted in fertility, renewal, and care for the earth, also opens space to examine women’s historical roles as creators, leaders, and guardians of life, and to revisit ancient traditions in which women held significant authority.

The discussion also highlighted ecofeminist perspectives that link the exploitation of nature with the oppression of women, calling for a more respectful and responsible relationship with both. Participants explored how contemporary feminist communities are reimagining Tu BiShvat rituals—such as inclusive Seders—to amplify women’s voices, stories, and spiritual leadership.
