Exploring the Challenges of Those Who Immigrated to Israel as Children
Last week, Project Kesher Israel (PKI) welcomed 400 individuals at the final event in their “Like in the Movies” series, marking the conclusion of a successful partnership between the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, PKI and the two largest Russian-speaking Facebook groups in Israel. The series explored the experiences of Russian-speaking olim across generations, highlighting their cultural, social and activist contributions to Israeli society.
This closing event centered on the so-called “Generation 1.5,” which consists of young adults who immigrated to Israel as children with their Russian-speaking parents. Though raised and educated in Israel, many still encounter integration challenges reminiscent of their parents’ struggles. Professor Larisa Remennik of Bar-Ilan University gave an insightful lecture based on her extensive research on Russian-speaking aliyah. The evening concluded with a screening of the acclaimed Israeli film Yana’s Friends, which created additional opportunities for reflection and dialogue.
