Highlights from Vinnytsia's Jewish Weekend

The recent Jewish Weekend in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, organized by Project Kesher Ukraine (PKU), celebrated the intertwined cultures of Ukrainians and Jews. Vlada Nedak, Executive Director of PKU, emphasized the event's significance in promoting greater understanding of the traditions of Ukraine’s extensive Jewish community; the deep historical connections between the Ukrainian and Jewish people; and how these identifies are shaping the future of the country.

Over two days, Jewish Weekend participants immersed themselves in a range of educational opportunities, including a discussion about women’s leadership and a lecture on the regional cuisine, notably the fusion of Ukrainian, Jewish, and Polish influences in the Vinnytsia region. They also attended a theatrical performance based on the works of the American playwright Don Nigro; a calligraphy master class, in which they crafted inscriptions in Hebrew script; and a walking tour of Vinnytsia's Jewish quarter, in which they explored the city's rich Jewish history.

These Project Kesher-convened gatherings do more than offer immersive Jewish education. They facilitate deep connections among individuals and with Judaism’s rich history—opportunities that have been shown to sustain people suffering the emotional trauma of war.
