Strengthening Safety and Confidence for Immigrant Women
Mothers from Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking immigrant communities in Israel are facing heightened vulnerability amid war, displacement, and social isolation. Many carry primary responsibility for their families’ safety while navigating their own insecurity. Research from Project Kesher Israel (PKI) highlights increased exposure to violence—particularly during times of crisis—with LGBTQ+ women facing additional barriers to accessing safe, culturally responsive support.
In response, PKI launched a pilot self-defense program designed to equip women with practical tools for personal safety while strengthening confidence and offering a sense of control. The program also fosters a supportive, inclusive group environment where participants can share experiences and build connections.
Implemented within the Haifa LGBTQ+ group, the pilot has already shown meaningful impact. Participants report increased awareness, confidence, and a stronger sense of personal safety—alongside the invaluable experience of being seen, heard, and supported in a space where they truly belong.
