Women’s Opportunity Fund Purchases Challah Baking Equipment
The Jewish Community of Shostka told Project Kesher Ukraine (PKU) and WOF-UA that they have a group of ten women who meet weekly to bake challah for the housebound, elderly Jews of their community. But, as the challah bakers themselves age, they are now 60-70, this mitzvah is becoming too demanding. So, WOF-UA purchased a mixer/dough maker that enables the bakers to knead 6+ pounds of dough at a time.
Elizabeth, one of the bakers reports: ‘I was born in 1947. On the eve of Shabbat, my grandmother always baked challah, but our parents tried to hide the small children from this process. They were afraid that we’d be talkative and that our knowledge of Jewish traditions would expose our family to persecution. Now, in our community, gathering to bake challahs puts us all in a good mood and generates positive thoughts. We are so grateful to WOF-UA and PKU for the long-standing friendship and support!’
