Project Kesher Israel Celebrates Citizenship Success

We are thrilled to share a wonderful success from our ongoing efforts to support LGBTQ+ couples seeking refuge in Israel. Together with our partners at IRAC and LACO, and under the guidance of attorney Nicky Maor, PKI has successfully assisted Sonya and Nika, a young couple from Moscow, in gaining Israeli citizenship for Nika, the non-Jewish partner.

After escaping persecution for their activism in Russia, where their home was invaded & searched due to their LGBTQ+ identity, Sonya and Nika fled to Israel, where Sonya received citizenship based on her Jewish heritage. With PKI's support, including legal representation from LACO, Nika has also been granted the status of a new immigrant, allowing her access to essential governmental benefits and the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming an actress.

Their journey highlights not only the challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals fleeing oppressive environments, but also the essential role of Project Kesher Israel in providing crucial support for families in need. Nika and Sonya are among many couples seeking safety and the chance to build a future in Israel.
