Meet Project Kesher Ukraine’s Yulia Robchynska

Yulia Robchynska is a vital member of Project Kesher Ukraine, where she serves as the Jewish Education & Programs Manager. Earlier in the month, Yulia shared some of her recent work & accomplishments in our Exclusive Briefing from Ukraine – she has a passionate connection to the mission of Project Kesher, which is rooted in Jewish values and feminist principles.

Reflecting on her journey, Yulia shares, "At one of our events, I was asked how I found myself at Project Kesher. This answer is obvious to me: I’m a woman, I’m a Jew, and I’m a feminist—so where else can I be? It’s an honor to be part of a team engaged in such impactful initiatives."

One notable project Yulia is leading involves translating primary texts from Hebrew into Ukrainian, a need that is just beginning to emerge and will undoubtedly grow. "We are supporting the Jewish community as it navigates this new phase of self-identification," she explains.

The self-identification of Ukrainian Jewry holds deep significance for Yulia. "Our community has preserved its culture and traditions while also embracing aspects of Ukrainian culture, enriching both. Through our ‘Jewish Weekend’ project, we explore the beautiful intersections of language, literature, music, and cuisine." Yulia takes pride in the project format, which features illuminating speakers and enthusiastic attendees eager to learn about the rich history of Jews in Ukraine.

Yulia’s own reconnection to her Jewish roots began with volunteering. She coordinates the ‘Ball of Kindness’ project at the Jewish Volunteer Center in her city, where she's leveraged her knitting and crocheting skills to bring warmth to those in need. "Our unofficial slogan is ‘Warming those who can’t warm themselves.’ Whether it’s providing warm clothes for the elderly, woolen outfits for preemie babies, or cheerful hats for children battling cancer, the true value lies in the attention and support we offer."

"Not all of our volunteers share Jewish roots, but I am deeply moved by their acceptance and willingness to help. When tasked with embroidering challah covers for our oldest community members, they poured care into every stitch, understanding the joy that the arrival of Shabbat brings."

In addition to her work, Yulia's personal life is rich with cultural exploration, thanks in part to her daughter, who studies folklore. "Her knowledge has opened my eyes to the incredible richness of Ukrainian culture," Yulia says. This connection has also led her to collaborate with researchers of traditional music, enriching the ‘Jewish Weekend’ program with inspiring speakers and musicians.

Outside of her professional pursuits, Yulia enjoys participating in pub quizzes, where she finds intellectual engagement and joy with her fantastic team. "I love seeing the growing interest in this form of entertainment. An evening spent with friends always brings me comfort," she adds.

A shining example of commitment and passion at Project Kesher Ukraine, Yulia works tirelessly contributing to both her community and the broader cultural tapestry of Ukraine.
