Exploring Identity and Acceptance Through Film
PKI’s LGBTQ group in Tel Aviv recently gathered together to watch and discuss the film Disobedience, a 2017 drama directed by Sebastian Lelio that explores the intersection of LGBTQ identity and Jewish Orthodox tradition. The discussion, led by Tel Aviv LGBTQ coordinator Sonya Kogan—who herself fled persecution in Russia—delved into the painful realities of rejection, as well as belonging and resilience.
Participants engaged in a poignant discussion about the film’s themes from both Jewish and societal perspectives. They shared personal stories about facing societal exclusion, reflecting on the struggles of being their authentic selves in communities that refuse to accept them. The conversation was deeply emotional and affirming, reinforcing the importance of creating inclusive spaces where individuals can embrace their identities without fear.
