Supporting LGBTQ+ Refugees in Israel
Since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, thousands of refugees have arrived in Israel — including many LGBTQ+ people fleeing both the war and repression in Russia. Project Kesher Israel has opened its doors to these new immigrants and refugees, ensuring they receive the support and community they need.
To address their unique challenges, PKI partners with refugee-rights organizations that often lack expertise on the needs of Russian-speaking LGBTQ+ newcomers. Together with HIAS, which has developed significant experience supporting Ukrainian refugees, we recently hosted an online meeting with a lawyer specializing in refugee rights. Dozens of asylum seekers joined the discussion, gaining critical guidance on avoiding mistakes in applications, preventing fraud, and navigating the long legal process of seeking status in Israel.
As part of our expanding network of support, we also connected refugee women with Isha L’Isha’s introductory ulpan program in Haifa, designed specifically for women without legal status. These partnerships are helping LGBTQ+ refugees find safety, stability, and a stronger sense of belonging in Israel.
