In June 2004, marking the 10th anniversary of the Jewish Womens
Conference in Kiev, Project Kesher brought 250 women from around
the world on the Voyage on the Volga a social activist
adventure by boat down the Volga River stopping in communities
impacted by our work. The ages of participants ranged from 16
to 84 years old and more than 30 mother-daughter pairs traveled
together. The first phase of the Torah Return Project took place
with 6 Torah Scrolls donated from communities in the United
States and hand carried to the region. Singer-song writer Debbie
Friedman and artist Beth Grossman were artists-in-residence.
The artwork
created on the boat is part of a permanent collection
of Project Kesher which depicts the personal stories and family
history of participants. The trip featured meetings with local
activists, cross-cultural programming, music, art, touring options
and a range of programming on issues such as domestic violence,
trafficking in women, womens health, tolerance and more.
In May 2007, Project Kesher is planning its next social activist
adventure the Summit on the
Black Sea to Kiev and Yalta, Ukraine.
