The demand for mail order brides
has dramatically increased in recent years as American men
have sought 'traditional wives,' and economic situations have
declined for women, particularly in regions like the CIS.
Experts agree that the rate of spousal abuse is "higher
in this population than for the nation as a whole. One study
of immigrant women whose legal status depends on their US
citizen or legal permanent resident spouse found the rate
of domestic violence to be as high as 77%" (Tahirah Justice
Center)
Using information from the Tahirah Justice Center, Project
Kesher has begun to educate women in the CIS about the dangers
of becoming a "mail order bride" and advising them
of their rights if they choose to come to the U.S. despite
these concerns.
Project Kesher leaders helped advocate for the U.S. government's
passage of the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act,
legislation that will, upon funding, disclose the records
of men with a previous history of violence against women.
